Columbia Youth Orchestra

CYO provides an opportunity for string students to develop important musical and interpersonal skills through orchestra playing, including both full group rehearsals and sectional coachings, culminating in a final concert.

Whether your budding musician is in the process of working up to “auditioning level” for more advanced programs, such as those offered through the Howard County Public Schools, or is attending a private school or is homeschooled and may not have access to those orchestras, or simply wants even more playing opportunities, we offer orchestra experience to all of those students.

ABOUT Columbia Youth Orchestra

As the only non-school-affiliated student orchestra in Howard County, Columbia Youth Orchestra aims to fill the need for inclusive ensembles open to beginning, intermediate, and advanced string players. Private school and homeschooled students are welcome, as are public school students lacking access to an orchestra ensemble that matches their schedule and level. CYO's beginner ensemble helps students who want to learn how to play in an ensemble and work on note-reading skills and group performance, while the intermediate level is suited for students who have some orchestra experience already but would like to improve those skills and play at a higher level. The advanced level is for more experienced players who want a more challenging orchestra program and will work on more advanced skills like shifting and vibrato. Students up to age 19 will be accepted.
